Summertime performances in Amsterdam

Head to the Open Air Theatre in Amsterdam’s Vondelpark to catch summertime performances from children’s acts, classical presentations or the latest Dutch or international pop performer. From June until early September you’ll find a lot going on every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Entry is free, although all voluntary donations are appreciated. During May and September, there are special events, markets and one-off festivals taking place.

Theatrical heritage

Amsterdam’s Vondelpark is steeped in musical and theatrical heritage. The ‘Vondelpark Parties’ were organised in the park and the Music Pavilion and Vondelpark Stage both hosted music, operetta and dance performances over the years. The Vondelpark Open Air Theatre sprang into life in 1974, combining the ‘Vondelpark Parties’ and so-called ‘Happenings’ – the name given to the performances organised at the time.

Within Vondelpark

Nearby, and still within Vondelpark, are a couple of cafes and restaurants such as the Blauwe Theehuis and Groot Melkhuis, each with their own wonderful aspect to watch the passersby. The park also a popular destination for tourists on rental bikes and picnickers in the summer.
